Why should you hire a tutor?

Tutors offer families that sense of security that is often missing regarding a child’s education. When a child reaches Secondary School parents often feel a sense of a loss of control. Letters and information often don’t arrive as they fester in the bottom of a teenager’s bag. There is a move from knowing your child’s teachers and friends to being left at the sidelines trying to secure that your child is safe, well and continuing to gain a good education. At parents evening, you are given a five minute slot with each subject teacher and you can be left with so many unanswered questions because there is a queue of other parents waiting for their turn. Your child may not share information about their day and if you have concerns and would like to talk to a specific teacher, it can seem impossible.

Tutors fill these gaps through targetted lessons that address your child’s individual needs. A tutor will allow a child to engage and ask questions they may be too embarrassed to ask in a classroom. Often a child needs to revisit foundations such as phonics in order to improve spelling or work on inference to increase their level of comprehension. A tutor can cover topics in more depth and have the time to provide individual feedback. They can adapt learning styles to suit the child and read a book that is not on the curriculum but one that inspires the child to enjoy learning. This can then have a positive impact on their learning and grades at school. Students look forward to sharing details of their week with someone who cares how they did that week.

Teachers have very limited time to interact individually with your child and school can be so fast pace a child can be left feeling demotivated and overwhelmed. Ask your child at the end of the day how many direct conversations they have had with their teachers in a day and you may be shocked that on some days the answer will be none. Teachers are providing their best within a system that allows children to fade into the background. This is not about criticising teachers but about the reality of the school experience for many children today.

Hiring a tutor means that a parent can discuss their child’s learning weekly and can feel empowered to support their child’s learning. The child gains confidence and is able to fill any foundational gaps. The child will feel supported and start to enjoy a subject they may have previously hated and as a result they will start to get better grades.

The Education Endowment Foundation have published statistics that those children who have an individual one to one tutor can gain up to six months attainment and those who take part in small group tuition can make academic gains of four months.
